The artist’s works, through his unique story, are dedicated to willpower and inclusion.

By Giorgos Athanasiadis

The exhibition “Catch Me” at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation brings Nicholas Kontaxis to Greece for the first time. Kontaxis is an internationally recognized Greek-American artist and a member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Through his works, which exude intensity, emotion, and optimism, he conveys the challenges he faces in life, creating an explosive artistic language. Despite severe physical and developmental difficulties and having experienced over 75,000 epileptic seizures, his art serves as his unique means of communication. The exhibition’s opening will take place on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

The exhibition

The central element of the exhibition is the trampoline, a work that symbolizes solidarity and a new beginning. Originally a rehabilitation tool, it has been transformed into a canvas, inviting viewers to see life with renewed perspective — courage, hope, and faith in the power of creativity. The idea was born when Nicholas Kontaxis, during a visit to New York, saw a trampoline and immediately felt its deep symbolism. For him, it represented the safety net that his family and friends provide, supporting him every step of the way. “I took it with me immediately because I knew Nicholas would want to paint it,” recalls his mother.

The work pays tribute to those who stand by us as pillars of support in life. In a symbolic gesture, the colors of the piece have been blended with ashes, incorporating the past and the concept of transformation through art.

Talking about the exhibition

Fleurette Karadonti, Chair of the Board at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, states: “The exhibition Catch Me highlights the power of art as a universal language. Nicholas Kontaxis’ work transcends limitations, speaking directly to the viewer’s soul. It is not merely a visual presentation, but a hymn to courage, creativity, and indomitable will.”

Equally moving are the words of the artist’s mother, who traveled to Athens for the exhibition: “Catch Me is Nicholas’ dream to share his art with Greece, the country of his ancestors. It is a call for us to stand together and see how creativity can become strength, hope, and a way of life. Nicholas cannot express himself in words, but his works speak louder than any voice.”

The projection show at the Panathenaic Stadium

The official opening of the “Catch Me” exhibition is paired with a spectacular projection show at the Panathenaic Stadium, offering a unique visual experience. Nicholas Kontaxis’ artwork “Yes I Can” will be projected on a large scale, transforming the iconic stadium into a dazzling display full of color and emotion.

This creation conveys a universal message of perseverance, resilience, and triumph, inviting everyone to overcome life’s obstacles. Open to the public, the projection invites Athenians and visitors alike to participate in a historic cultural event that combines art and history. Alongside the Panathenaic Stadium — an emblem of Greece’s athletic and cultural heritage — it highlights the power of the human spirit.

The exhibition's value

The exhibition is enriched with accessible activities and educational programs, in collaboration with the Nevronas team and the Leonteios School of Nea Smyrni, strengthening the audience’s connection with art while highlighting the importance of inclusion and empathy.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore a recreation of Nicholas Kontaxis’ studio, experiencing the artist’s world up close. More than just an exhibition, “Catch Me” is a dynamic invitation to acceptance, inspiration, and creative expression. Through his art, the artist unites people, breaks down barriers, and conveys a universal message of courage and strength.
